What is the Coroner Cadet Program?

The Coroner Cadet Program is a unique, two-week hands-on experience for high school students (grades 9-12) designed to introduce them to the world of forensic science and death investigation. The program includes interactive activities like analyzing cause of death, studying human decomposition, and working with experts in various forensic fields.

Who can apply for the program?

The program is open to students in grades 9-12 who are enrolled in Richland County schools. Applicants must have permission from a parent or guardian, a recommendation letter from a teacher or school staff member, and a genuine interest in forensic science.

What are the costs of the program?

The program costs $350 per student, but thanks to generous community scholarships, the program is offered at no cost to selected students. We encourage donations to help continue offering this opportunity to future students.

How do I apply for the program?

To apply, students must complete the scholarship application, submit a recommendation letter, provide a current high school transcript, and write a 150-200 word essay about their interest in the program. The complete application packet should be submitted to the Richland County CONNECT Team.

What is the application deadline?

The application deadline for the upcoming class will be announced on our website and social media channels. Be sure to check for updates so you don’t miss the opportunity to apply.

What will students learn during the program?

Students will learn the basic principles of crime scene investigation, death investigation, body recovery, and forensic science. They will participate in activities like dissecting organs, excavating bones, and analyzing the life cycle of a blowfly, while being mentored by professionals in the fields of pathology, anthropology, entomology, and law enforcement.

Will there be any certification or recognition for completing the program?

Yes! Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive a certificate recognizing their participation in the Coroner Cadet Program. Students will also gain valuable skills that can be useful for future careers in forensic science, medicine, or law enforcement.

Is there any support for students with financial needs?
