A One-of-a-Kind Educational Journey
The Coroner Cadet Program is the first of its kind in the state, providing a two-week immersive experience tailored for students in grades 9-12. Participants will engage in real-world applications of mathematics, physical science, and biology, connecting these subjects to the intricate art of death investigation. This program turns the science behind popular crime shows into reality, sparking curiosity and passion for STEM fields.
Hands-On Training at the RCCO Body Farm
One of the most remarkable aspects of the program is its student-led “Body Farm.” Here, students delve into the science of decomposition, time of death determination, and cause and manner of death investigations. With expert guidance, students will:
- Examine human organ anatomy and physiology.
- Follow the life cycle of a blowfly to study entomological clues.
- Excavate bones in simulated recovery exercises.
- Dissect organs to understand internal forensic processes.
This hands-on approach ensures students gain practical knowledge while building confidence and teamwork skills.
Activities Beyond the Classroom
Students also participate in activities like public speaking, measuring, presenting, and more, developing a comprehensive skill set. Experts in pathology, anthropology, entomology, and law enforcement share their knowledge, enriching the learning experience.
The program culminates in group presentations where students showcase their casework to family and the community, celebrating their hard work and growth.

How to Apply
Interested students must meet the following qualifications:
- Be a current 9th–12th grader in Richland County.
- Obtain parental or guardian permission.
- Secure a recommendation letter from a teacher or school staff.
- Have a strong desire to learn about death investigation and forensic science.
Applicants will also submit an essay reflecting on how the program will impact them and their community.
